JAM Paranormal Lead Investigator
GILBERTSVILLE, Pa. — A graveyard with plots spanning over 300 years was perfect for JAM Paranormal’s first investigation. New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church, built in 1700, has plots for several war veterans of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The church itself, which was not available for investigating at this time, was used as a hospital during the Revolutionary War. Its history is plentiful, and in the opinion of JAM Paranormal, so is its paranormal activity.
In a two-part investigation, JAM Paranormal recorded more than 15 EVPs — some more solid than others — and had several other experiences.
On July 13, 2007, JAM Paranormal spent two hours in the graveyard — after a short stint on July 3, 2007 — with five investigators equipped with video and digital cameras, digital voice recorders and an EMF meter.
The EMF sweep showed that the base was zero — obviously, since a graveyard should not produce electro-magnetic fields. The EMF meter spiked once, up to a 1.5 in an area which proved to be very active.
It was a hot spot during the July 3 investigation, where six EVPs were recorded in 12 minutes. The trip to New Hanover that night was a last minute decision after having investigated another nearby graveyard, Cannon Hill in Boyertown, Pa. Other than an unexplainable cold spot on a 70-degree night, Cannon Hill was silent.
New Hanover was quite the opposite and 12 minutes of activity at New Hanover made a return trip a must.
In the graveyard, there is a gazebo with tall pine trees around it on the farthest end of the graveyard away from the church. That was in the area where the EMF spike was noted on video camera. It also is where the majority of JAM Paranormal’s EVPs were recorded.
On July 3, JAM Paranormal investigators Matt Boyer, Ryan Dotterer, Matt Freed and myself scanned the area with digital cameras and voice recorders. (The EMF meter was not present for this investigation.)
As soon as investigators reached the area of the gazebo, voices began to appear on recordings. Note that none of these were heard live by investigators.
A whisper was prominent in a few EVPs, saying, “Stop it.” It, in the opinion of JAM Paranormal, sounded like a child’s voice whispering. That made even more sense when we caught the whispering child interacting with another child.
On EVP 1, a whisper is heard saying, “Stop it.” Then it is followed by a young boy’s voice stating, “No.” And then the whisper kicks in after an unexplainable noise, saying, “Stop kicking me.” The clear male voices heard on the recording belong to investigators.
As is the case in all recordings, investigators are instructed never to whisper and speak loudly and clearly.
The same whisper is heard in EVP 2, saying “Stop it,” and then saying something that is unintelligible.
Shortly after recording EVP 1 and 2, investigator Freed was walking with other investigators away from the area and stepped in a little hole which tripped him up. It is heard on EVP 3, and as he trips, he says “Ow … I found a hole.” Immediately after he says “Ow,” there is a laugh in the background which progresses into some other unexplainable sounds, none of which belonged to an investigator.
We also recorded a voice in that area saying, “Get out,” which can be heard on EVP 4. EVP 5 starts with an investigator saying, “What do you see over there?” A voice out of nowhere says, “That’s nice.”
The sixth EVP that was recorded that night is the toughest one to hear. It features a conversation between investigators followed by an unintelligible mumble, which comes in after an investigator says, “No. It was because it was cold.”
Shocked and amazed by what we experienced in just 12 minutes made us upset that we didn’t have more time on July 3 to investigate further. So we packed up and went back out on July 13.
This investigation included the same four investigators plus guest investigator Dan Kadushin. We knew that the EVP activity was centered around the gazebo, so we spent a good amount of time walking around that area.
Throughout the night, three investigators had experiences with seeing shadows moving through the graveyard, but there was nothing on video that could back up those claims.
The most incredible piece of evidence came when Kadushin, Freed and I were standing less than 20 yards away from the gazebo. Boyer and Dotterer were on the other side of the graveyard investigating at this time.
The three of us were talking and all of a sudden, Freed and I hear a voice coming from the pine tree. “Psst,” is what we heard, as if someone or something was trying to grab our attention. It worked. Freed and I both reacted to the noise.
“Hear that?” I asked.
“Yeah, I did,” Freed responds.
When reviewing the recording, the “Psst,” wasn’t the only unusual sound, but it was the only one heard live.
The activity starts about 40 seconds prior to the “Psst,” when Kadushin, joking around, asks if any ghost knows the ending of a movie that is planned for, could they tell him. A harsh, deep voice states firmly, “Get off,” or “Get out,” which can be heard on EVP 1.
Ten seconds later, there’s unexplainable skip in the recording, with voices that do not belong to JAM Paranormal investigators.
At the 24-second mark, there’s a hiccup kind of noise that repeats behind the investigator’s conversation followed by heavy breathing.
Then, the “Psst,” is heard, and just before I say, “Hear that,” a whisper comes in, and it sounds to us like it says, “You hear me.”
Soon after this minute of unexplainable activity, which at the time, I just knew as a voice saying, “Psst,” I began conducting EMF sweeps around the pine trees. Nothing registered, but as I was using my cell phone as a light to view the screen on the EMF meter, my cell phone (brand new) powered down.
Naturally, I thought the battery was out seeing as I often forget to charge it, but I was able to turn it back on and it read that I had four bars of battery power. I called out to Kadushin and Freed, who were holding the digital voice recorders about 20 yards away, and told them to come over to where I was. As soon as they reached me, my cell phone powered down by itself again.
When reviewing this on the digital voice recorders, there are several whispers before I say, “It did it again,” referring to the cell phone shutting off. Right after I said that, a whisper says, “Come on, turn around.” This can be found on EVP 2.
Earlier in the night, Freed, who was carrying one of the digital voice recorders, had responses to some of his statements. In EVP 3, he says, “Hello,” and a whisper says, “Hi.” In EVP 4, the same “Hi,” is heard after Freed speaks. The same voice saying something that cannot be made out is heard in another EVP after Freed speaks. (We did not post that one.)
EVP 5 and 6 are just unexplainable voices we caught during the investigation.
With the amount of clear EVPs, the EMF spike and the energy loss from my cell phone, JAM Paranormal concludes that New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church’s cemetery is haunted by several spirits. We do plan on returning for another investigation and we are looking into seeing if we can get inside the church for part of the investigation.
